The Alliance for Immersion in Museums (AIM) project was first supported through a two-year grant by the Institute for Museum and Library Services in 2023. This project was created to help build the foundation of a field-wide coalition of museums and media producers that could work together toward best practices and a better understanding of the technological and experiential affordances and challenges related to creating immersive digital experiences in museums.
A small group of founding AIM museums shared best practices, developed standards, identified effective interaction modalities for immersive digital experiences, and documented strategies for sharing media and content between museums. We are now sharing these resources and launching the coalition to new members across the United States and around the world. Founding AIM museums include:
-
Museum of Science (Boston, MA)
-
The Tech Interactive (San Jose, CA)
-
COSI (Columbus, OH)
-
Great Lakes Science Center (Cleveland, OH)
-
Exploration Place (Wichita, KS)
-
The Exploratorium (San Francisco, CA)
-
TELUS Spark (Calgary, AB, Canada)
-
Science World (Vancouver, BC, Canada)
History
Why AIM?
Digital immersive experiences are increasingly present in museums, but almost always created in siloes. The central promise of this organization is that increased public demand for such experiences can be leveraged to engage eager consumers in topics of societal importance; that if we work together toward high standards, shared specifications, and a commitment to creating experiences that are accessible, interactive, engaging, and dynamic, then we can share experiences and achieve collective impact greater than any museum could accomplish alone. This organization strives to create a community of thinkers and creators, in order to share knowledge and experience, encourage meaningful discussions, and enhance networking opportunities for all its members to create an integrated ecosystem around digital immersive experiences across museums.
